Gemma raus!

The Gemma raus! project focused on physical activity parks for elderly people in Viennese public space. The aim of the interdisciplinary team of sports pedagogues and landscape planners was to promote health, motion and exercise of this age group in an urban context.
On the one hand, the team evaluated the first physical activity parks and their use by the elder generation. On the other hand, it included an activating part with practical interventions to encourage the use of physical activity parks. These interventions comprised information concerning the sites, activating exercise programmes, networking between sports groups and discussion forums about the findings. As a result, guidelines for the design and for the support of elder users of physical activity parks have been developed.

In 2014, a follow up evaluation of the more than 20 physical activity parks in Vienna was carried out. Potential sites were discussed with disseminators and new sites proposed in order to achieve a good citywide supply with physical activity parks.
