Social Area Analysis

The City of Vienna contracted social area analyses of the two shopping streets Meidlinger Hauptstraße and Mariahilfer Straße. In order to provide a profound basis for design competitions, the focus was on small scale socio-spatial questions: the streets and their surrounding neighbourhoods.
The analyses aimed to investigate actual and potential demands of diverse groups towards the public space. They included work on population data, participant observation, expert interviews and group discussions.

The findings were integrated in the design competitions and in a participation process. Furthermore, a checklist for future social area analyses has been developed.
