KinderGardens - Open Space in Nursery Schools
What is the significance of outdoor play areas for girls and boys in nursery schools? How do design, furniture and pedagogic work influence space and behaviour?
The project „KinderGardens“ focused on gardens of nursery schools from the perspectives of health, gender and environmental education. On the example of eight Austrian nursery schools, the facilities in their gardens were documented, as well as the activities of the children and their perceptions and patterns of constructions of space. Pedagogic practice and the background of the children concerning age, gender and ethnicity were identified as influencing factors.
The results were discussed with parents and teachers of the concerned nursery schools, at vocational trainings and conferences. To improve health and physical activity and to enable a broad range of environmental experience, recommendations and measures were developed in cooperation with the nursery teachers, reaching from changes of the spatial organization, additional materials/toys to pedagogic inputs.
