Blooming Islands
The project “Blooming Islands in Everyday Life of Margareten“ searched for ideas for well-designed
urban sites of trees and micro spaces in the streets of the Margareten district in Vienna.
Inhabitants and passers-by benefit from attractive streets. Especially important are micro spaces
with their opportunities for short-time stays for groups who spend their time primarily in the neighbourhood
such as children or elderly people.

tilia started with a systematic cartography of the streets, tree sites and micro spaces and analysed their specific
potentials as open spaces. District residents were informed and were asked for their ideas:
The participative actions of “What will I take with me to the Margarten Island?“ included information on the project,
activating street interviews, seed envelops, free post cards picturing inspiring examples in Margareten and information
on urban gardening offers by the city administration.
The inputs were analysed and checked for their potential to realisation. We developed recommendations
for more green and more possibilities for everyday needs in the streets of Margareten.
